Washington Sundar Likely To Play Asia Cup 2023 Final

Washington Sundar Likely To Play Asia Cup 2023 Final

In a closely contested battle during the final Super Four match of the Asia Cup 2023, the Indian cricket team faced a six-run defeat against Bangladesh. However, this loss does not impact India’s qualification for the Asia Cup final, as they had already secured their spot. The match against Bangladesh was an opportunity for India to test their bench strength, leading to several changes in the playing XI.

Setback for Team India Ahead of the Final

Team India is set to face Sri Lanka on September 17th in the final match. However, they have received a major setback as star all-rounder Axar Patel is likely to miss the final clash. According to PTI, Axar Patel sustained an injury during the match against Bangladesh, affecting both his hand and thigh. Axar contributed with a valiant 42 runs off 34 balls during the game against Bangladesh, but couldn’t secure a victory for the team.

Axar’s Injury During the Bangladesh Match

During the match against Bangladesh, 23-year-old Washington Sundar was called in as a substitute fielder for Axar Patel. Although the seriousness of Axar’s injury is not known yet, during the game, he was visibly in pain, having initially injured his hand. He had called for physiotherapy as the throw from a Bangladesh fielder hit his other arm near the elbow.

Batting with a strap on his hand and thigh, Axar continued to contribute with the bat. He had partnered with Shubman Gill for the seventh wicket, scoring 39 runs, and later added 40 runs for the eighth wicket with Shardul Thakur. However, he got out in the final over, extinguishing hopes of an Indian victory.

BCCI’s Statement on Axar’s Injury

An anonymous source from the BCCI revealed, “Axar is currently nursing multiple injuries. He has hurt his finger, got hit on the arm by the throw from the Bangladeshi fielder, and most importantly, he has a hamstring issue. Hence, Washington Sundar was called in as cover.”

Concerns for India’s World Cup Squad

If Axar Patel’s injury turns out to be severe, it could raise concerns for India’s World Cup preparations. Axar is one of the three spinners in Team India’s World Cup squad and provides valuable lower-order batting support. It remains to be seen whether he can recover in time for the World Cup.

Washington Sundar’s Role

Washington Sundar is currently part of the Asian Games training camp in Bengaluru. He is known for his prowess as an off-spinner and his batting abilities in the lower order. While he played a one-day international against New Zealand earlier this year, he was not included in the 15-member World Cup squad. If Sundar is selected for the final, he could be a handy option with his off-spin against Sri Lanka’s left-handed batsmen.

As the cricket world eagerly awaits updates on Axar Patel’s injury, Team India faces uncertainty ahead of the Asia Cup final and the looming ICC World Cup.
