Violence Persists in Manipur as Protests Erupt Following Arrests of Five Youths

Amidst the ongoing violence in Manipur, a peaceful resolution seems elusive. On Thursday, a mob demonstrated aggressively, demanding the unconditional release of five youths who had been arrested. The mob attempted to attack Porompat Police Station in Imphal East and Singjamei Police Station and Kwakeithel Police Outpost in Imphal West. However, security forces thwarted their efforts.

Security forces responded with tear gas

Security forces retaliated by firing tear gas canisters into the crowd, injuring more than 10 individuals. Officials provided details of the incident and shared that as a precautionary measure, the state government had canceled the relaxed curfew imposed in both Imphal districts from 5 PM to 9 PM on September 21. All previous restrictions will remain in place.

Arrests on September 16

On September 16, Manipur Police arrested five individuals on charges of possessing sophisticated weapons and wearing fake military uniforms. The police had presented them before a Judicial Magistrate, following which they were remanded into police custody.

Lifting of curfew

In response to Thursday’s events, the district magistrate of Imphal West issued an official order revoking the relaxation of curfew imposed from 5 PM to 9 PM, effective immediately. Similar orders were issued in the East Imphal district.
