James Cleverly, the Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom, has expressed support for India’s bid for permanent membership in the United Nations (UN). He also extended support for Germany, Brazil, and Japan’s aspirations to become permanent members of the UN.
While addressing the Council on Foreign Relations, Cleverly stated, “The challenges that the world presents to us are significant. There is an opportunity for us to progress with a positive attitude. We have the opportunity to work with our traditional friends. This means that we must also give a voice to emerging powers globally. The UK supports India’s bid for permanent membership in the UN. Africa too deserves a strong voice at the global level.”
Cleverly highlighted discussions he had during his Beijing visit, where he engaged with the Chinese government on issues where both nations have disagreements. He mentioned topics such as the Uighur Muslims and cooperation on economic and artificial intelligence matters.
Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the UK Foreign Minister also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He revealed Putin’s belief that he could dominate Ukraine and other countries worldwide, but Cleverly disagreed. He praised the support provided by the United States and other nations, stating that they have given Ukraine the means to fight and establish a unique identity.
