Tragedy Strikes: 17 Lives Lost in Mizoram as Under-Construction Railway Bridge Collapses

A tragic incident unfolded in Aizawl, Mizoram, as an under-construction railway bridge collapse led to the loss of 17 lives. The mishap occurred near the Saihrang area, causing shockwaves through the community.

According to police sources, around 35 to 40 people were present at the scene during the accident. There are concerns that some of these individuals might be trapped under the debris. Currently, a joint team comprising personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), state administration, and railway officials is engaged in rescue and relief operations. As of now, the bodies of nine individuals have been recovered and are being sent to nearby hospitals for medical assistance.

The incident transpired approximately 21 kilometers away from Aizawl around 10 AM. All the bodies of the deceased have been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to locate any additional missing individuals. Railway officials have stated that the construction process of this bridge had been approved by expert professionals from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). However, in order to ascertain the exact causes of the accident, a high-level committee has been formed.

Prominent Figures Extend Condolences and Aid

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister of Mizoram, Zoramthanga, both expressed their condolences through tweets. PM Modi conveyed his sorrow and announced compensation of two lakh rupees for the families of the deceased, along with fifty thousand rupees for the injured. In addition, CM Zoramthanga expressed his sympathies for the families who lost their loved ones and thanked those coming forward to help the injured.

The Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, tweeted regarding the incident of the Mizoram Railway Over-Bridge collapse. He stated, “Deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident in Mizoram. NDRF, State administration, and Railway officials are on site. Rescue operation in full swing. Ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, ₹2 lakh for the seriously injured and ₹50,000 for those who suffered minor injuries will be given.”

The incident has brought mourning and concern, with investigations ongoing to uncover the circumstances leading to the collapse of the under-construction railway bridge in Aizawl.
