Bangladesh clinched a significant victory against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup, winning by 89 runs in the group stage. With this win, Bangladesh has now secured two points from two matches and has high hopes of reaching the Super 4 stage. On the other hand, Afghanistan faced their first defeat in the tournament after their previous match. They currently have zero points in the group stage. Both Bangladesh and Afghanistan have completed their two group-stage matches. The fate of these teams in the Super 4 stage will be determined by Afghanistan’s match against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has earned two points from one match.
Bangladesh’s captain Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and opted to bat first in the match. His decision proved right as the team managed to score 334 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 50 overs. In response, Afghanistan struggled and could only manage 245 runs for the loss of all their wickets in 44.3 overs. Ibrahim Zadran scored 75 runs, and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi contributed 51 runs. However, after their dismissals, Afghanistan’s batting lineup failed to provide any substantial resistance. Taskin Ahmed took four wickets for Bangladesh, while Shoriful Islam claimed three wickets. Hasan Mahmud and Mehedi Hasan Miraz took one wicket each.
Prior to this, Mehedi Hasan Miraz (112) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (104) scored centuries for Bangladesh. After losing five wickets against Sri Lanka in their previous match, Bangladesh got off to a good start against Afghanistan. Mehedi and Najmul shared a 196-run partnership for the third wicket. However, Miraz had to retire hurt during his innings. The partnership was broken when Najmul got out, ending their partnership at 215 runs.
Mehedi and Najmul both scored their second centuries in ODIs during this match. Miraz retired hurt after scoring 112 runs, and Najmul scored 104 runs. Before their partnership, Mohammad Naim (28) and Mehedi had put on 60 runs for the first wicket. Afghanistan attempted a comeback by taking four wickets in just four balls against Naim and Towhid (0), but Miraz and Najmul not only stabilized Bangladesh’s innings but also pushed them towards a big total.
The effective duo of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman couldn’t make a significant impact for Afghanistan. Rashid conceded 66 runs in his 10 overs without taking any wickets, while Mujeeb took one wicket for 62 runs. Mohammad Nabi also went wicketless, giving away 50 runs in his 10 overs. Afghanistan’s batting innings didn’t start well either, as Shoriful dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz (1) in the second over.
Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim scored 25 runs off 15 balls, and Shakib Al Hasan remained unbeaten with 32 runs from 18 balls, taking Bangladesh’s total to 334. Afghanistan faced a challenging target and fell short of Bangladesh’s score.
This match has added excitement to the Asia Cup group stage, with Bangladesh now eyeing a place in the Super 4, and Afghanistan hoping to bounce back in their next game against Sri Lanka to remain in contention.
