Use of Meta Description Tag in SEO

I had already discussed about the Importance of Meta Keyword Tag and Title Tag for SEO in my Previous post ! Like Keyword and Title Tag, Meta Description Tag is also placed between the <head></head> section of a web page.

This tag is used by the Search Engines to display information regarding a web page. It is also displayed in SERP’s displayed by the Search Engines. Since this tag is displayed in Search Engine Ranking Pages, It is important for a web page and is supposed to be well structured so as to get good traffic, because if a user will find the description interesting and useful enough then only he/she will click and visit it.

Format for Meta Description Tag

<meta name=”description” content=”Description of your web page.” />

Here are some important points to be remember while making a Meta Description Tag for your web page:

  1. Do not increase the length of Meta Description Tag to 150 - 200 characters, including spaces and punctuation.
  2. Use Unique Meta Description for every page of your website.
  3. Note that Meta Description is summary of your webpage and including 4-5 Keywords in this tag is a good idea.
  4. Try to use Important Keywords near the starting of description tag for Keyword Prominence.
  5. Do not use misspellings or other spelling variations in the Meta Description Tag.
  6. Make sure that you use the Meta Description Tag to describe the page it will be added to.

Apart from above it is suggested to search Google, yahoo and MSN for your favorite keyword and check the description for the top 10 sites .. So that you will get some more idea about this tag !!

    So every .php file must have his own description?
