October 7th, 2008 | by Ankit |There are probably 101 applications for the data that can be extracted from Google trends but here are 10 that could easily be applied to help in business and marketing planning.
- Effective stock management.
- Marketing campaign planning.
- Customer behavior.
- Identifying purchase cycles.
- Market predictions.
- Strategy Planning.
- Marketing research tool.
- Market comparisons.
- Product comparisons/Portfolio planning.
- Product lifecycle analysis.
Google Trends for “Ice Cream” in the UK for 2007.

Ice Cream Searches in Google Trends
As would be expected the search results for ice cream show a seasonal set of results with higher volumes in the summer which could be applied to product demand. Extending the period over a number of yeasr and comparing to other data such as mean monthly temperature also shows a that annual peak search volume is higher in years with a higher mean temperature. Maybe obvious facts in this situation but could also be used to identify any correlation between searches for “Jimmy Choo Shoes” searches against Sex in the City TV broadcasts etc. It can also be broken down to show country data making it possible to identify market variations and opportunities.
The list could go on and on but really no better way than dipping in and playing with a few trends around search terms relating to your business or industry and see what it reveals. Do be careful though this is another online time trap and hours can be lost!!
